North Mecklenburg families weighing school options beyond their assigned attendance zone can get answers at a free virtual session Thursday, Oct. 8, from noon to 1 p.m.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced the event on its official X account Sunday, Oct. 4. The session, titled "CMS School Choice Lottery Explained: What to Expect at Every Step," is part of the district's Family Academy lunch-and-learn series.

The session is free.

CMS's school choice program lets families apply for schools outside their home attendance zone through a lottery. The district's FAQ page outlines common questions about the program, including how to apply, how seats are allocated, what documentation is needed and how many schools a family can list on one application.

School choice is a pressing topic in the Lake Norman area. Dr. Charlitta Hatch, the CMS Board of Education member representing District 1, which covers Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville, listed "school choice and magnet programs" among the top concerns she hears from local families in an Aug. 11 update published by Cornelius Today.

CMS has not yet posted the 2027-28 lottery application timeline on its Key Dates page. The 2026-27 application window opened Oct. 13, 2025, and closed Dec. 5, 2025. Email notifications for that cycle went out Jan. 6–16, 2026, and the transfer and reassignment period ran March 16 through April 15, 2026. At least one CMS school, J.T. Williams Secondary Montessori, has directed families to monitor the Key Dates page for updated 2027-28 timelines.

The Family Academy series, which serves the district's nearly 140,000 students and their families, has covered student placement, transportation, and career and technical education in earlier sessions this school year.
