Huntersville mixed-media artist Carleen Davis won first place at Mooresville Arts' 44th Annual Artoberfest, beating out 56 other regional artists with her piece "Pablos' Return to Cote d'Azure."

Davis was one of four Lake Norman area artists to take home awards at the juried competition, Iredell Free News reported. Jayne Braxton of Cornelius won a Judge's Choice Award for her acrylic painting "Pink Tree." Renee Calder of Huntersville placed third for her ceramic piece "Dance," and Dan McCrary, also of Huntersville, earned a Judge's Choice Award for his watercolor "Indoor Chrome."

Charlie Anthony of Mooresville took second place for the oil painting "Red Couch and Three Planters."

Paul Travis Phillips, a professor of art at Elon University, judged the show. More than 300 people attended the awards reception on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Three additional Judge's Choice Awards went to Janice Harris of Hickory for "Be Still and Bloom" (mixed media), Teresa Rench of Mount Holly for "Emerging Whole" (encaustics) and Janet Visser of Denver for "LKN Where the Storm Meets the Light" (pastels).

The exhibit features paintings, drawings, mixed media, pottery, glass and more. All artwork is for sale, with proceeds benefiting the artists and Mooresville Arts, a nonprofit gallery in downtown Mooresville's historic Train Depot at 103 West Center Ave. Admission is free.

The show runs through Thursday, Nov. 12. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday, noon to 4 p.m.; Friday, 2 to 8 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed Sunday and Monday.
