A fire that broke out Sunday evening on Barnstable Drive in Huntersville damaged two homes and displaced six residents and three pets, the Huntersville Fire Department said.

Multiple neighbors called in the blaze just after 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18, reporting that a fire outside a home was growing and climbing an exterior wall, according to Queen City News. The street sits in a neighborhood near Gilead Road.

When crews arrived, they found flames coming from the garage roof and the second floor. Firefighters began attacking the blaze from the alley side of the home, the department said.

The fire threatened a neighboring house. Crews first worked to stop the spread to that adjacent home, then turned to extinguishing the main blaze, according to the department.

"Aggressive decisions and aggressive tactics made quick work of this fire," the Huntersville Fire Department wrote.

Despite the quick response, both homes sustained fire, smoke and water damage. The Mecklenburg County Fire Marshal's Office deemed both structures unsafe to occupy.

Six people and three pets from the two families were forced out of their homes. The displaced families are seeking housing assistance from local families, WCNC Charlotte reported.

The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating where the fire started and what caused it. Neither source identified the homeowners or provided a damage estimate.
