The Town of Huntersville is warning its electric customers about callers requesting payment for services, sometimes using the Electric Department’s phone number on caller ID.
In a Nov. 2 alert, the town said several customers had been affected. It said scammers were spoofing the department’s number to make their calls appear legitimate.
The town says it does not collect payment information or process electric payments over the phone. Customers who receive a suspicious call should hang up and call 704-948-0550, the number provided in the official alert, to ask about their account.
The town advises customers to:
- Keep personal, banking and credit card information private when an unsolicited caller requests it.
- Treat caller ID as unverified; the displayed number can be manipulated.
- Contact the town directly using its published number rather than relying on information supplied by the caller.
The alert says scammers often use urgency and fear to pressure people into acting quickly. It does not provide an exact complaint count or report confirmed financial losses.
