Davidson church to screen Stephen Curry's literacy documentary Aug. 28

Davidson College Presbyterian Church will host a free screening of "Sentenced," a documentary about childhood illiteracy co-produced and narrated by Golden State Warriors guard and Davidson College alumnus Stephen Curry, on Friday, Aug. 28.

The screening runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at DCPC's Congregation House, 218 Concord Road. Free pizza, childcare and a post-film discussion about local tutoring opportunities are included. Residents who plan to eat must register by Wednesday, Aug. 26. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available upon request.

DCPC's Social Justice Committee is organizing the event, according to a church announcement.

The 69-minute film follows ethnically diverse adults and children who never learned to read, exploring how literacy can break cycles of generational poverty. It cites U.S. Department of Education statistics showing 43 million American adults cannot read well enough to get a basic job. The film is no longer available on streaming platforms and can only be seen through community screenings like this one.

Curry, who played three seasons of basketball at Davidson College from 2006 to 2009 and graduated in May 2022, co-produced the film with his wife, Ayesha Curry, through his production company Unanimous Media in partnership with the Children's Literacy Project.

"Nothing is more foundational, or more important to a child's success in life than the ability to learn and love to read," Curry said in a statement when the documentary premiered on Peacock on Sept. 16, 2024. "When that is missing, you take away the opportunity for an individual to meet their full potential."

The four-time NBA champion has maintained deep ties to Davidson. In March 2025, Curry and the Berman family announced an eight-figure fund to support the college's men's and women's basketball programs, and his jersey No. 30 has been retired by the Wildcats.

After the screening, organizers will share information about ways attendees can volunteer to tutor children in reading locally.
