The Davidson Film Club screens the Oscar-winning satire "Jojo Rabbit" Saturday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. at the Armour Street Theatre, followed by a discussion led by a Davidson College Holocaust studies scholar.

Scott Denham, the Charles A. Dana Professor of German Studies at Davidson College, will lead the post-screening conversation. Denham has been on the faculty since 1990 and holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University. His research includes Holocaust film reception, with a published study of "Schindler's List" in Germany and Austria, according to his Davidson College faculty page.

The 2019 New Zealand film, directed by Taika Waititi, follows a lonely German boy who discovers his mother, played by Scarlett Johansson, is hiding a Jewish girl in their attic. The boy's only ally is his imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler, played by Waititi himself. The film won the Oscar and BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and earned four additional Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

Walk-in tickets cost $9, cash or check only. No credit cards are accepted.

The club's membership for its July through November series is full, but walk-in seats remain available. Residents must reserve a spot in advance by emailing Alan Singerman, the Richardson Professor Emeritus of French at Davidson College who has led the volunteer-run nonprofit since he founded it in January 2013. The Armour Street Theatre, home of the Davidson Community Players, is located at 307 Armour Street in Davidson and seats more than 100 people.

The club's current series has featured films from Bhutan, Japan, Iran and New Zealand. Its January screening was "The Zone of Interest," a two-Oscar-winning film about the Holocaust.
