New lighting rigs hung above the Hopewell High School stage this spring because of a roughly $20,000 grant the Theatre Arts department won through the Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative, a program of the American Theatre Wing. Teacher Lillian Allemond called the equipment "a game changer" for her students' productions, according to Lake Norman Publications.

Then the grant kept giving.

Allemond learned she had been selected through a lottery to serve as a seat filler at the 79th annual Tony Awards, held June 7, 2026, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. By the end of the night, she was in the front row for the Best Musical announcement.

The Classroom Resources Grant arrived during the 2024-2025 school year, just in time for the spring musical. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Initiative, now in its 10th year, funds equipment and materials for theater programs in under-resourced public schools nationwide, with individual grants of up to $50,000.

An American Theatre Wing representative traveled to Huntersville in March 2025 to present the award, meet students and attend their show. The representative photographed Allemond's students that day. That image later appeared in the Tony Awards Playbill magazine, leading an article about the initiative.

Allemond, who has spent all 10 of her years teaching theater in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools at Hopewell, said the ceremony left an impression she plans to carry into the classroom.

"Performers don't make it to Broadway and the Tony Awards without first performing in a high school auditorium, or building and designing a set for a tiny theater on a shoestring budget," she said. "I hope that my students can see themselves in these performers and realize that their own journeys may not be so different from that of the performers on stage."

Inside Radio City, Allemond filled the seats of three or four presenters and nominees as they moved backstage, shifting around the theater throughout the Pink-hosted broadcast. She described an opening number featuring roughly 180 performers as a particular highlight, and said the energy of watching that many artists perform live on one stage is something a recording can never replicate.
