Garry L. McFadden, a Democrat, is seeking reelection as Mecklenburg County sheriff in the Nov. 3, 2026, general election. The county election board lists his candidacy.

Experience

The Major County Sheriffs of America biography records his swearing-in on Dec. 4, 2018, after a 36-year Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department career that included more than two decades as a homicide detective.

It describes McFadden as originally from Sumter, South Carolina, with ties to Elliott and Mt. Pleasant High School. He came to Charlotte to attend Johnson C. Smith University. BallotReady lists a physical education bachelor’s degree in 1982.

The sheriffs’ association biography documents work with Cops and Barbers, recognition for community policing and appearances on the television programs I Am Homicide and Homicide City.

Stated priorities

Axios reported in February that McFadden wanted to expand mental health and reentry programs if reelected.

Correction: An earlier version ended McFadden’s CMPD service in 2011. The sheriffs’ association describes a 36-year career before his 2018 election. An outdated campaign link that now displays unrelated content has been removed.
