Wind gusts up to 60 mph and nickel-sized hail threatened north Mecklenburg County on Tuesday, Aug. 11, after the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning covering Cornelius, Davidson and surrounding communities.

The warning, issued at 5:46 p.m. by the NWS Greenville-Spartanburg office, remained in effect until 6:30 p.m. At the time of issuance, radar showed severe thunderstorms along a line stretching from west of Mocksville to northeast of Newton, moving southeast at 25 mph.

The NWS warned that damage to trees and power lines was likely and that power outages were expected across the affected area, which spanned portions of at least nine North Carolina counties including Iredell, Catawba, Rowan, Cabarrus, Lincoln and Davie, plus north central Mecklenburg.

The agency instructed residents to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building and stay away from windows until the storm passed.

Storm continued past initial warning

The severe weather did not end at 6:30 p.m. A second warning was issued at 6:49 p.m. covering all of Mecklenburg County, including south Charlotte and Uptown, until 7:45 p.m. That warning carried the same 60 mph wind gust and nickel-sized hail hazards, according to meteorologist Brad Panovich, who shared the warning sequence on Facebook as the storms moved through the region.

The Aug. 11 storm system was part of a multi-hour severe weather event that produced warnings across at least 10 North Carolina counties and portions of South Carolina throughout the afternoon and evening.

No confirmed damage in Lake Norman area

As of Wednesday, Aug. 12, no local agencies have confirmed storm damage, power outages or emergency responses in Cornelius or Davidson. Huntersville, which falls within the warning's "north central Mecklenburg County" coverage area, also has no confirmed reports. Duke Energy, the Cornelius-Lemley Fire Department and local police departments have not responded publicly with storm-related information.
